Wayanad Floods Live Updates (1st - 30th August 2024)
30th August 2024:
Nirmaans dedicated team successfully delivered 300 "Back to Home" kits to the Krishnagiri collection point in Wayanad and is now working to distribute the remaining kits to other affected areas.
29th August 2024:
We officially handed over 1,000 "Back to Home" Kits, generously donated by our esteemed partner, Synopsys, to Wayanad District Collector Dr. Meghasree IAS. These kits will be distributed to those in need.
18th August 2024:
Director Rajamouli's team of 8 members collaborated with Nirmaan to volunteer for 4 days at one of the relief camps in Wayanad.
Nirmaan's team of volunteers is working across 24 relief camps, supporting over 3000+ people taking shelter in Wayanad.
16th August 2024:
The Nirmaan Disaster Response Team, along with volunteers, visited severely flood-affected villages in Chooralmalla, Vellarimala, and Mundakka in Wayanad.
The floods and landslides have caused damage estimated at over 1400 crores in the affected villages.
14th August 2024:
Nirmaan volunteers conducted a 'Need Assessment' at the Meppadi Government Community Health Center in Wayanad.
Based on the assessment, we decided to establish mental health sessions and upgrade physical health infrastructure to support flood-affected families.
12th August 2024:
A special camp to retrieve official documents of the landslide survivors who lost everything was launched on Monday in the disaster-hit regions of Wayanad.
A 190-member team comprising NDRF, the police, Fire and Rescue Services, the Civil Defence Force, the Forest department, and rescue volunteers have resumed the search operation at five zones of the disaster-struck areas in Wayanad.
9th August 2024:
Kerala’s Revenue department officials on Friday issued instructions to several residents in the Nenmeni village of Wayanad district in Kerala to temporarily relocate to safer locations following reports on minor earthquakes. The minor episodes of tremors at different intervals were mostly felt by the residents at Kurichiarmala, Pinangod, Edakkal, Moorikkappu, Ambukuthimala and Ambalavayal areas.
6th August 2024:
Nirmaan Disaster Response Team met with Smt. Meghashree D.R., IAS, District Collector and Magistrate; Mr. Misal Sagar Bharath, Sub Collector; and Mr. Seeram Sambasiva Rao, IAS, Principal Director of Local Self Government and Special Officer for Wayanad Disaster Management.
We discussed the Wayanad landslide relief and rehabilitation program and provided an overview of Nirmaan's initiatives. Despite their busy schedules, they gave us about 20 minutes and responded positively to our efforts.
5th August 2024:
Nirmaan Disaster Response team provided emergency medicine to flood rehabilitation health camps at GHS Meppadi, SKMJHSS School, and DE Paul Rehabilitation Camp, benefiting around 1,000 individuals.
At the SKMJHSS School Rehabilitation camp, we also distributed breakfast and dinner to 1,500+ beneficiaries and provided breakfast for 200+ flood-affected individuals at the Kalpetta rehabilitation center.
Additionally, we met with the Deputy Director of School Education in Wayanad to discuss the school education program in the district and received a positive response.
4th August 2024:
The death toll in Kerala's Wayanad continues to rise as rescue operations enter the sixth day. Over 360 people have died in one of the deadliest landslides in the nation. Thousands have been rescued and are in relief camps. About 1,300 rescuers are on site, facing challenges from huge boulders and logs
The rescuers took hours to reach her area in Chooralmala village one of the worst hit as the roads were blocked by debris.
3rd August 2024:
The death toll touched 357, with 18 more bodies recovered on Saturday, including 16 from the Chaliyar River.
Around 2,000 people from various forces have been deployed in Wayanad and among them are Maya, Murphy, and Maggie, three members of Kerala's dog squad who have been helping the rescue team recover bodies that have been buried in the soil.
2nd August 2024:
Massive landslides in Kerala's Wayanad have claimed at least 308 lives, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Friday, even as rescue operations continued in several areas.
In landslide-hit areas, rescue operators are facing difficulties with waterlogged soil as they search through the wreckage of homes and buildings for survivors or bodies. Search and rescue operations continue at landslide-affected Chooralmala in Wayanad.
1st August 2024:
The death toll from the series of landslides in Meppadi in Wayanad district had reached 276 on Thursday (August 1) morning, with at least 240 people still missing. Some 200 people were injured.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was immediately deployed to assist in rescue operations and provide relief to affected families.
