Nirmaan BITS Pilani, Goa Chapter

Nirmaan Goa Chapter, established in 2007, is a dynamic force of student-led social change driven by the passion and dedication of over 250 volunteers from BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. As an extension of the visionary Nirmaan Organization founded by BITS Pilani students, we are committed to making a profound impact in our community.

For 17 years, our relentless drive for social empowerment has propelled us to excel in education, employment, healthcare, and community development. We have organized over 15 transformative events and launched 20 impactful initiatives, each reflecting our dedication and resilience.

Our daily efforts include supporting the education of more than 200 slum children, hosting annual blood donation camps with over 150 donations, and conducting beach clean-ups to safeguard our environment. We empower women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and provide crucial health check-up camps and awareness sessions for underprivileged communities. Through these initiatives, we are continuously working to create lasting, positive change.

OUR PROJECTS AND EVENTS

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EMPLOYMENT OPERATION

Our Employment Operations aim to provide meaningful employment and empower women in underprivileged neighborhoods. We collaborate with the women from Birla slums, forming two Self-Help Groups (SHGs) where they learn to create sustainable handicrafts and arts. Together we made and sold 85kg of Holi colors and 1500 Diwali items this year. Recently, we set up another SHG of 10 women in Lamani. Over the years, we successfully established Project Ashadeep in the Zari slum area, which became self-sufficient and independent in 2020.

This initiative has enabled 40+ women to create and market a variety of handicrafts, including diyas, candles, tote bags, scrunchies, and Holi colors. By working alongside them, we have helped these women sell their products, fostering financial independence and sustainable development within their communities.

EDUCATION OPERATIONS

The education operations are divided into four verticals namely Disha, Shiksha, Teach Zari and Project Lamani have a dedicated set of 160 volunteers who teach 6 days a week.

PROJECTS DISHA AND SHIKSHA - Project Disha and Shiksha focuses on preparing and teaching children from the Lamani and Zari slums near our college campus for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) exams. We work with a total of 50 beneficiary children and prepare them for the government scholarship test. The selections for JNV have shown a positive trend over the years. So far we have had 30+ selections of the students through both the verticals. This demonstrates the effectiveness of our teaching methods and the comprehensive support we provide to the children and their families.

PROJECT TEACH ZARI AND PROJECT LAMANI - Teach Zari and Project Lamani make a significant impact by providing regular educational support to over 80 children in the slum areas of Zari and Lamani. In addition to their classes, both initiatives enrich the children's lives through a variety of engaging events, including interactive activities, campus outings, and events such as Happy Streets and Eduspark. They also celebrate national and cultural events such as Republic Day, Children’s Day, and Teacher’s Day, further enriching the educational experience and fostering a sense of community and pride among the kids. These efforts aim to enhance the educational experience and overall well-being of the kids.

HEALTH OPERATIONS

The health vertical, with 35 dedicated members, regularly organizes comprehensive check-up camps in Zari, including eye and dental camps. This year, we provided vital healthcare services to over 70 individuals during the eye camp and 55 during the dental camp, with plans to extend these services to Lamani. Our impactful awareness sessions in schools included a pivotal menstrual health session at Murgaon High School, with plans to expand these educational programs next year. On-campus blood donation camps successfully met the entire requirement, showcasing our community’s generosity.

UDAAN

Udaan is a Sports Fest for the differently abled. With participants from across Goa, Udaan is one of the largest fests of its kind, it stands as a testament to the spirit of inclusivity and determination. This year, Udaan stood out as one of the most inspiring events at BITS Pilani Goa, showcasing amazing performances in 8 sports with over 150 participants from 6 special schools, including Long Jump, Unified Football, Shot put, Athletics, and Bocce. In collaboration with Special Olympics Bharat (Official National Body for Special Olympics in India), we celebrated the talents and determination of our participants.
