Every October, when we mark the seven-day celebration of giving, it reminds us that the true power of charity lies in the simple act of sharing. The Daan Utsav, also known as the Joy of Giving Week, invites every one of us to ask: How can I give today? Whether it’s time, money, skills or simply a caring gesture, giving doesn’t need to wait for a special date. The core purpose is to make generosity easy, inclusive and ongoing.
When the week ends, the question remains: how can we carry that spirit forward?
This year, Daan Utsav at Nirmaan was not just an event, it was a pause. A pause from routines, screens, and meetings to think about something larger than ourselves: the simple act of giving.
At BirlaSoft, employees took a break from their work to explore what giving really means. They listened to stories of government school students who struggle to access proper education and how Nirmaan’s education programs are helping them dream bigger. The room was filled with curiosity. People asked thoughtful questions about how they could contribute and what difference a small act could make. Some even walked up after the session to ask how they could volunteer or support a child’s education.
The discussions didn’t stop there. Many employees opened up about the issue of hunger, sharing their own perspectives on how a society like ours, filled with abundance, can still leave so many people without a meal. It became a heartfelt exchange about empathy, purpose, and how giving adds meaning to our work and life.
We also celebrated Daan Utsav at Bosch on the 24th and 25th of September, turning two ordinary workdays into something joyful and thought-provoking. Employees took part in fun games. We introduced the four causes Nirmaan stands for for this Daan Utsav: Gift a Childhood, Together for Inclusion, Food for Hunger and Punar Nirmaan.
Amid laughter and play, there were moments of reflection. Living in a city where everything is within reach, many employees paused to think about those living in flood-affected villages or underprivileged neighbourhoods. They asked questions about how Nirmaan responds to disasters, creates livelihoods for people with disabilities, and ensures that no child is left behind.
For two days, giving became a shared language. It wasn’t about how much one could give, but about understanding why giving matters, the idea that everyone can stand for everyone, and that the true joy of giving lies in caring for one another.
When giving gives joy, it doesn’t have to end with a week. We can carry that feeling forward and make it part of our everyday life. Every day, a child is dreaming big even when his resources aren’t; a person with a disability is hoping for dignity and independence; a family is worrying about their next meal. These are reminders that the Joy of Giving Week is not just a celebration, it’s a call to continue.
There are countless ways to celebrate giving back throughout the year: supporting education through small monthly donations, exploring volunteer opportunities for families, or trying fundraising ideas for community giving in your office or neighbourhood. Each act adds to the circle of kindness.
If you’ve ever wondered how to donate to charity, start with a cause that touches your heart. Because giving doesn’t just change someone else’s day, it changes yours too. As we celebrate festivals, birthdays, and milestones, let’s also celebrate compassion. Let’s make giving not an event, but a way of living, the quiet joy of giving gifts to others, again and again.
