Imagine feeling exhausted even after a full night’s sleep, struggling with dizziness, and being unable to focus on simple daily tasks. This is the reality for millions of women in India suffering from anemia, a condition caused by a deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood.
According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), a staggering 57% of Indian women aged 15-49 suffer from anemia, making it one of the most widespread yet overlooked health issues. Despite its severe consequences—including increased maternal mortality, weakened immunity, and impaired cognitive function—anemia remains a silent crisis.
Nutritional Deficiency: Poor dietary intake of iron-rich foods such as leafy greens, lentils, and fortified grains.
Menstrual Blood Loss: Many women experience heavy periods but lack adequate iron supplementation.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Increased iron demand during pregnancy often leads to severe anemia, impacting both mother and child.
Social and Economic Factors: Gender-based discrimination often results in women eating last and receiving less nutritious food.
Anemia doesn’t just affect individual women—it holds back families, communities, and national progress. Chronic anemia leads to:
Poor maternal and child health outcomes
Reduced work productivity and economic impact
Impaired cognitive development in children
Yet, anemia is preventable and treatable. Raising awareness, improving nutrition, and increasing access to healthcare can eradicate anemia in India—but only with collective action.
At Nirmaan, we believe that good health is the foundation of empowerment. Through our Medical Impact Projects, we are actively working to combat anemia by:
Conducting Anemia Awareness Camps: Educating women about anemia symptoms, risk factors, and prevention strategies.
Free Hemoglobin Screening Camps: Offering free hemoglobin level testing in underserved communities.
Iron & Nutrition Supplementation Drives: Distributing iron-folic acid (IFA) tablets and promoting consumption of iron-rich foods.
Community-Based Nutrition Workshops: Teaching affordable, iron-rich meal preparation techniques using locally available ingredients.
Maternal Health Support Programs: Partnering with healthcare professionals to ensure pregnant women receive adequate iron supplementation.
Meet Renu, a 28-year-old mother from a rural village in Telangana. Suffering from chronic fatigue and dizziness, she was unable to care for her young children. At a Nirmaan medical camp, she discovered she had severe anemia. With nutritional counseling and iron supplements provided by our program, her health improved significantly. Today, she is thrivingproof that awareness and intervention can change lives.
Anemia is not just a health issue—its a social and economic crisis. But together, we can make a difference.
