More than 1 million villages in our country still don’t have access to electricity. Over 37.7 million people in India are affected by water-borne diseases due to contaminated drinking water supply.  National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) stated that there were at least 16,196 farmers' suicides in India in 2008, bringing the total since 1997 to 199,132. And the list continues. All this converges to the same point that India needs to concentrate more on the advancement of grass root Technologies.

Operating Model


Short Term Impact:

  1. To support students with ideas for innovation for social and environmental problems by  providing mentorship and actively getting involved in the process of innovation 
  2. To Identify Social, Environmental problems and the needs of marginalized poor; and design and innovate practical and affordable solutions to these problems using science and technology

Long Term Impact:

  1. To act as a platform that brings together technical expertise, young talent and resources at the universities; and grass-roots experience to find solutions to social and environmental problems.
  2. To act as an incubating agency that strives for the implementation of developed solutions through the Government, NGOs and Social Enterprises

Work done So far:

  1. Parishod teams are established in two chapters namely BITS pilani and BITS Goa.
  2. Grass roots problem solving events like Dhiti and Bhagirath were conducted during our tech fest like APOGEE  and SPARKS in BITS pilani and BITS Goa respectively with more than 300 participants every year since 2009
  3. A paper bag making machine is developed by our team in Goa which is transferred to the SHGs to help them in the source of generating some income.
  4. Established a good relationship with organizations working in technology frontier like NIF, NSEF, EWB, SKDRDP, Sustainable Innovations and Pratham.

Current Work in progress:

  1. A sustainable Rain Water Harvesting project called Aakash Ganga is being undertaken by Parishod Team in BITS pilani in collaboration with Sustainable Innovations Ltd.
  2. A Bio gas plant project taken up Parishod Team of BITS Pilani in collaboration with an NGO called SKDRDP.
  3. A project on developing educational videos in regional languages called E-Shiksha is  being undertaken by Parishod Team of BITS Goa.

Organization Structure

Parishod functions through the centers established at the universities. The organizational structure of Parishod consists of two teams; core team and research team.  The core team looks after the overall working and administrative tasks while research team will carry out core research and development activities

  • Core Team:

The core team identifies and defines problem statements by interaction with Govt., organizations and communities. It initiates research projects and form research teams by inviting students, technical associations; initiating TIC projects. It initiates collaborations with Govt. and organizations. It monitors the progress of research projects; facilitates required mentorship and raise funding for the projects. The core team also conducts competitions to acquire best ideas and teams.
Core team also works for arranging funding for the projects officially taken up by Parishod. In case of the projects in association with Govt. or other organizations, funding can be sought from them. The terms of funding in such case will be decided when the projects are initiated

  • Research Teams:

Research teams conduct research on the projects taken up. Their association with Parishod may remain limited to the project or it can go beyond through their involvement in the functions of core team. The members of core team can also be encouraged to participate in research projects. With time this overlap of functions should increase evolving into an expanding, participatory, self evolving but well coordinated structure

Our Approach

  • Identification of the problems:

Identifying social, environmental problems and the needs of marginal poor to which technical, management, process oriented solutions can be offered. This process of identification can take place through various means such as discussions with NGOs, government, Social Enterprises; direct communication with communities through field trips and days long immersions experiences; Internships at NGOs working at grass-root level etc.

  • Research Projects:

Initiating research projects to develop solutions to identified problems. Forming research teams by bringing together the talent and expertise at the academic institutions such as students, professors, technical associations; resources and infrastructure facilities available at the academic institutions; and grass-root experience. The Research projects can be in the form of formal projects under the guidance of Professors or informal projects taken up by technical associations, group of students.

  • End-to-end Involvement:

Monitoring the process of innovation from its inception to end. Following up the progress of the research projects and making sure that the research teams work with the right pace and motivation. Making the required resources, infrastructure facilities available for research projects. Arranging for mentorship in the form of technical expertise and grass-root experience.

  • Implementation:

Ensuring that the solutions being developed are practical, affordable and implementable. This will happen by being in continuous communication during the process of innovation with the stakeholders like communities and NGOs who are going to adopt the solutions; and involving them in the process of design and innovation. Carrying out an iterative process of feedback, pilot implementation and refinement by working closely with communities and NGOs. Trying for the implementation and marketing of solutions developed by the research teams through NGOs, Government and Social Enterprises. Incubating entrepreneurial start ups for the solutions which have market potential

  • Competitions:

Conducting open competitions at the universities where technical solutions will be invited on social and environmental problems in various broad areas. Such competitions are indented to motivate students to work towards technology for grass-roots; and invite solutions from much larger audience. Ideas coming up during these competitions can then further be taken up by Parishod as research projects or can be provided with mentorship

  • Support and consulting

Apart from the research projects and competitions Parishod can provide mentorship and other possible support to the students, groups working on the projects. The nature of such support will be decided on case by case basis and will be provided on demand.

Shiksha is an initiative of Nirmaan-Goa, started with a vision to help the underprivileged students gain free access to quality education. It involves providing coaching to the students of 5th standard in the government schools for the Admission Test of JawaharNavodayaVidyalayas. JawaharNavodayaVidyalayas are top class high schools , run by central government which provides free education to poor students until 12th class. 

Operation Clean Zari is a project taken up at Goa Chapter of Nirmaan. Zari is one of the slums in which the Goa chapter is working in.

The project aims at making the residents aware of cleanliness measures and its merits to make it a better place to live. We plan to achieve this by conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns. With the help of the local municipality, bigger dumpsters will be installed to replace the present ones to meet the needs of the community. Also a solid-waste management project is planned to be carried out in three phases. This project is being guided by Zuari Industries Limited.

NSMP: Nirmaan Scholarship and Mentorship Program (NSMP) aims to provide monetary help and career guidance to the meritorious but financially constrained students to pursue their professional degrees.

Nirmaan Scholarship and Mentorship Program(NSMP)

NSMP is a part of Nirmaan. Nirmaan identifies the students on merit cum need basis for scholarships and provides financial assistance and mentorship to guide the students in the right direction to realize their dreams.
Mentorship is done through workshops, career counseling sessions, and interaction with professionals in respective fields.

NSMP Success Stories

My humble background has always been a hurdle for me throughout my academic life. Even after some support from the government, I was constantly worried that the regular academic expenses (textbooks, exam fees), living expenses in a hostel would be a huge burden to my family. Fortunately, because of NSMP the past 2 years of my academic career has been hassle free and I have been able to concentrate on my studies. 


After studying for 12 years in Telugu medium schools I was aspiring to take up engineering, but my father, a farmer by profession who is the sole bread earner for our family couldn't support my education. With the help of NSMP I could continue my education in B.Sc. Agricultural Sciences and the support of the mentors has developed good interest in me and am planning to pursue higher studies and do a post-graduation. If not NSMP it would have been a very tough life for me and my family as both of us would have gone through a huge emotional turmoil.


I wanted to pursue my engineering after my 10+2 but I was reluctant to join due to financial constraints.  My father expired, my elder sister was pursuing B.Sc and my mother, school teacher is the only bread earner in my family. I approached NIRMAAN and they provided me financial support for my 4 years of graduation.

Aim of the project - "Women Empowerment"

We planned to choose the vocations with a clear focus on women empowerment. Of the 1.3 billion people who live in absolute  poverty around the globe, 70 percent are women. For these women, poverty doesn’t just mean scarcity and want. It means rights denied, opportunities curtailed and voices silenced.

Empowerment is the one of the key factors in determining the success of development in the status and position of women in the society. We put a special focus on empowering women and girls, because we believe they hold the key to long-lasting social change in communities. It is our moral, social and constitutional responsibility to ensure their progress by providing them with equal rights and opportunities.


Project Overview

Vocational Training Centre was initiated in 2010, with an ​aim to provide skills and confidence to women from economically backward families and help them achieve economic and social independence​. Currently 2 training centers are operational one in Anjaiah Nagar, Hyderabad and other at Pothayapalli Village, Shamirpet.







A 3 month training program is carried out for women from financially constrained families. The selected women beneficiaries can choose to be trained in vocations like Tailoring, Embroidery, Bag Making and Mehendi. The training is carried out on a daily basis by experienced faculty. After completion of the training, trainees are certified by a recognized government organization.

After completing the course, some of the trainees are able to open small business units at home and earn money and few trainees took up jobs related to stitching.After sessions conducted on health awareness, the women are now aware of the importance of hygiene and the health problems related to child marriages. The attendance system, exams, cleaning the class room by taking turns and the class room environment makes the trainees lifestyle more disciplined.

To create a platform for the rural women to earn a livelihood by forming a self-sustainable group which through self help and mutual help prepare products and market them.


  • To form a group of 8-10 rural women and induce in them savings habit
  • To attach a business model to the group depending on the skill set and interests of the group
  • Help in the production and marketing of the products 
  • Make the group and business model self-sustained.



First we conduct a survey in the village and find out their interests. Then a training centre is opened in the village started by bringing the trainers according to the villager’s requirements. This can range up to a month. A very nominal fee of Rs.30 per month per person is collected so that the women are regular.Illiterate women are taught to at least sign their names.The training period lasts usually for a month. 

Forming a group:
After the training period women who have become proficient are short listed and the concept of SHGs is explained and a group is formed with a group of around 8 to 20 interested ladies.

Pilot production:
A pilot production is made to test the market for the products. This takes 10-15 days according to the products requirements.

Production process:
It takes about 2-3 months according to the market of the product.

We put up stalls for festivals like Oasis and Waves. There are Melas which go throughout Rajasthan, Goa. Contracts from mela owners are taken and the products are sold. There is lot of demand for Rajasthani products outside Rajasthan. Output of 5 to 6 SHGs is clubbed to make a large quantity and then Places like Delhi, Goa, Kerala and other tourist destinations are targeted. In this way profits are made and distributed amongst the ladies.

To provide value based education to the under- privileged children of the country.

To run an evening school to enlighten children with the importance of education and by imparting the three factored education (Character building, Nation building and Economic advantage giving) to all.

3. To teach every child, not only academics, but also how to develop a good character in turn how to become a good citizen for the nation
4. To strive for an all round development of the child – with basic qualities like leading, being part of a team and speaking well before others etc.,


The team of volunteers headed by a Project Leader is formed. The volunteers are divided into two groups- one group for Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday series.


The initial investment required for starting GyanBodh is low. Books are necessary for planning out the syllabus and prizes for the skill building sessions. A spacious room suiting the requirements (i.e. depending on the no of the students) and also with good the environmental conditions is selected. The place where children are taught is kept clean and well maintained and for that the team members themselves take the initiative with the help of the children to show the dignity of labor.

After finalizing the team and before starting formally with the activities at least two preliminary surveys are conducted to identify and get the children who need help. After those initial surveys the areas to be concentrated upon are determined. A rough estimate of the number of the students who are expected to turn up (depending on the response of the guardians and students) is then made and depending upon that an appropriate place is selected.  Depending upon the availability, the volunteers they are assigned classes.

Subjects taken up are mainly – Mathematics, Science and English. Books are procured for the classes which are to be taught and again some amount of planning will go into deciding the syllabus to be followed. Generally even school going children do not have good concepts and therefore first of all some sessions are devoted to brushing up their basics especially in Mathematics. For the students belonging to lower classes like from third to sixth – addition , subtraction , multiplication , division , simple fractions, decimals, tables  and for seventh to tenth in addition to the above LCM, GCF, indices, square-root, percentages, profit –loss-discount etc. 

Regular sessions start with an assembly of all the students and Nirmaan volunteers, followed by an hour teaching and then concluded by closing sessions wherein the students are brought up to date with the current affairs which improve their general knowledge. Daily record of the attendance of students as well as volunteers is maintained. Also the record of the following personal details should be maintained like Fathers’ name and Occupation, school and medium of instruction as in English or Hindi or any regional language, class.

Skill building sessions are held once a week preferably on Saturdays which include various activities like the following

  • Demonstrating simple science experiments and teaching them rudimentary geography with the help of maps. For science experiments the school books need to be consulted. Mostly the books describe certain simple activities that can be done easily.
  • Various competitions like Painting, Drawing, races, etc  are conducted and Prizes are given accordingly.
  • Children movies are also shown.
  • Students are encouraged to come forward and speak up before the others .
  • These sessions are taken as opportunities to teach the students the importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene , hard work etc and stories and anecdotes are also told so as to make it more interesting and effective.

Nirmaan, which was initially known as My INDIA is a thought emerged from the usual discussions on national issues that used to take place in the bhawans of BITS, Pilani. During one such usual discussion, few participants put up a thought that the idea of every citizen working towards a common goal of making India a developed Nation can alone solve the problems that the nation is facing. That powerful thought gave the birth for our organisation which is now called Nirmaan.  

Then, the plan was to craft a robust strategy to create a platform where everyone can work towards the common goal. Started with a very small number of around five to six members with its several initiatives like Gyanbodh, an evening school for underprivileged, libraries in villages, awareness programs in the campus on conservation of natural resources etc. in a short time, it gained the confidence of fellow BITSians and the faculty and gathered all likeminded people for the cause. Apart from initiation of such programs, soon after My INDIA was started, its members met and participated in discussions with various professors, businessmen and eminent social workers to craft a strategy for the organisation.

It took around one year of time to identify that three factored education and creation of livelihood opportunities as the focus areas, to craft such strategy and to give a proper vision to the organisation. During this one year time, all its initial members who are called the members of founding team put numerous night outs, faced many hardships to take the message of My INDIA to the BITSians, to the faculty and the beneficiaries around Pilani. 

Prof L K Maheshwari and his mentor role 
The then Director and present Vice Chancellor of BITS, Pilani, Great Patriot, Thinker and Professor in electronics, L K Maheshwari always stood with the team from day one as a chief mentor and gave a direction to the organisation in terms of delivery of service to the beneficiaries.

His thoughts “One rupee per day for the nation”, “Renunciation for the sake of neighbours”, “Nation comes first attitude”, “Education for the prosperity of the nation and not for ourselves” have left a great influence on My INDIA and its members. His regular interactions with the members and the project leads used to fill a lot of confidence and enthusiasm in them and used to refine their personalities.

Through his invaluable inputs, from the very start of the organisation till date, he has been mentoring the team in marching towards its vision.

The organization believes in the participation of the local community for the successful implementation of any project and hence it encourages the local communities to actively participate and take stake in the projects. 

2. Sustainability  
Sustenance of the projects and their benefits to the local communities is given the highest priority such that beneficiaries receive an uninterrupted service and thus Nirmaan strives for a permanent solution to the problems in its approach. 

3. Rational Approach
Nirmaan applies a scientific approach in framing its policies, formulating its projects or its programs and hence scientific methods are adopted and are extensively used in all its operations. 

4. Teamwork
Nirmaan recognizes that it cannot but work as a team to achieve its noble vision. The organization believes in practicing teamwork that goes beyond the realms of work - teamwork that extends to even the promotion of bonding in society, inculcating a feeling of collective responsibility and spirit of working hand in hand for the betterment of their lives.

5. Participatory decision making
As appropriate, relevant person/s would be involved in the decision-making process. All the members are encouraged to voice their opinions and the same would be given due consideration while taking any decision to emphasise participatory and non-hierarchical decision making process. 

6. Transparency and accountability
Nirmaan would be completely transparent in all the transactions that it makes and shall be accountable for every single rupee of the organization. Not only in financial matters but in all decision making processes it would maintain transparency to help minimizing the confusion and bring more support to the mission of organization. The organization shall release complete and timely financial statements, reports to all its members, shall publish the same on the website and thus adhere to the law to maintain non-profit status. Organization shall maintain zero tolerance towards any sort of financial indiscipline in the organization.

Motivation for the project:

The weaker and the underprivileged section of students, especially from rural areas stop their education because of financial hurdles. They are not aware of various scholarships available. Also, they do not have access to good academic advice and career counseling and thus, can’t take informed decisions regarding their future studies or career options. They lack guidance in their education and career from their parents and society. They lag in finding their own strengths and interests. 

Need: It is observed that a rural student faces the two major hurdles while choosing and pursuing a right career:

  1. Lack of “relevant information on demand” to make a life changing decision
  2. Lack of monetary and/or family support to pursue a career of his/her choice

Vidya Helpline Tele-counseling is a free service offered to students to avail information and guidance from experts on academics and careers at the golden hour.

Key Objectives of the Tele counseling center are

  1. Provide authentic and complete information to government school students in the following categories:













  1. To act as life-time academic counselor for all students and dropouts across the state.


The project was inaugurated on 22nd May 2010, initiating tele counseling center, by honorable Home minister, Andhra Pradesh and has been working in collaboration with Ranga Reddy District government. Till 31st March 2013, 60,462 queries from more than 20,000 students across A.P have been addressed. With the immense need of lack of information in the rural areas and high number of calls to a single line, we have expanded the project with 5 additional lines and have operational with 6 lines since 22nd Sep 2012.

Tele Helpline Working Model:

Career information and guidance is provided to the students through the toll free number. At the call centre, we have well qualified and trained full time academic counselors who assist the students. When a call is received at the call centre, it is attended by the counselors and the most authentic information is provided to the students using the most reliable and best resources, there by addressing the career needs.

Success in statistics:

  • Total calls received till March 2013: 60,462
  •  More than 17,000 unique callers
  •  Calls received from all 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh and 6 different states

Career Workshop Model


Goal Setting and Career Workshop is a face to face counseling wherein the trainers directly reach out to the students and inspire them to aspire for greater heights in life there by making them DREAM BIG.A huge spectrum of opportunities is then laid before them to choose.


In urban areas, there are many people today who are pursuing careers they are not passionate about. But in rural areas, the dreams of the students end with their schooling and Education and Career becomes a least priority for them, especially girls. They surrender themselves to their social backgrounds. However there are a plenty of options open for the students to assist. So the information we give is a source for them to decide on their future.
The purpose of conducting career workshop in goal setting workshop is to ensure that each and every child of class 9 and 10 sets himself a goal not out of ignorance or need but out of interest and information. The main aim of goal setting workshop is to make them believe in themselves and encourage them to pursue their dream career with total confidence in their strength and ability.

A two phase workshop model to make the rural students DREAM BIG by motivating them through videos and inspirational stories and exposing to career opportunities like nursing,paramedical, vocational along with professional courses like Doctor, Engineering,etc



























This way, we are actually projecting them various career opportunities that they would never have known. They have very limited exposure about their career opportunities and it is through this process, you are trying to lay a pool of career opportunities for the students to pick up appropriately .The goal setting session is also called as the DREAM Phase.

Expectations from Respect Phase:

At the end of this phase, the students are educated about the due respect to each career and laying before them a pool of career opportunities implicitly.
Exposure to Careers
After exposing the students to the various career opportunities around them, we need to concrete a few careers that are feasible to these girl students.

For any course being described, the optimum information to be shared with the students is:

  • Immediate Education after 10th
  • Free Education after 10th in Colleges


At the end of the plan phase, the volunteer should inform them about the opportunities of the following, post tenth class:

  •  Hostels
  • Free Education
  • Scholarships
