Nirmaan Organization

We have only one passion, The rise of a great Nation

Why?

Any community we work on cannot be uplifted by external tailor made projects. A detailed understanding of the community is a must for the success of any social project. Moreover, there is a need to establish a personal connect with each and every member of the community.  The two objectives of Nirmaan (i.e.  education and employment) can be achieved only when the community involved is progressive in nature and active in participation. Thus, endeavoring for overall development of a community by imbibing qualities such as self-development, leadership, self empowerment and innovation, will lead to healthier projects and achievements.  It helps in laying a good foundation for any initiative Nirmaan takes up in a community. Acceptance of a social project and thus the its success depend on:

  • Trust the community has on the volunteer
  • The genuine and dedicated interest of the volunteers towards the project
  • How well the project serves the specific and urgent needs of the community

Present Scenario

The realisation of this vertical has come late and also after a lot of projects have already been implemented. There are a lot of challenges that crop up in this vertical and they are chapter specific as each chapter works in a different demography. Going by chapter specific analysis,
Pilani- In both the villages that we are working in – khedla and baas , Community development is a much needed activity to be taken up, but there are lot of challenges we face. In khedla, agriculture is the main occupation and they carry it out every year. So it is a challenge to maintain the interest of the villagers and the continuation of the activities. Caste is major issue, so much so that the village is divided into two based on caste. So we have to carry out the activities in such a manner that this doesn’t hinder our activities. Baas is a very conservative village which is does not welcome the outsiders or heed the outsiders. Process of any activity/project might get slow in Baas as compared to other villages/chapters. We may not get good cooperation from the sarpanch.

Speaking about community in general, major and initial challenge will be in getting connected to the society. Any community looks at us as outsiders and does not heed us. Even if they pay attention to us and our ideas, they do not believe us. So overcoming this lack of trust and faith is big challenge. Also the initial interaction should not involve any promises but should only be building good relations, as unfulfilled promises lead to mistrust. Also, enough care should be taken in group formation to make sure that motivated and genuinely interested people are involved. Also, regular and continuous interactions over a long period of time are also a challenge because of the ever changing teams in terms of members. So, the juniors in team also should be as well acquainted as the seniors, so that they can fill the gaps when the seniors move out of the team.

Operating Model

The methodology has been described in phases as definite timelines cannot be set. 4 phases have been defined
Phase I -Understanding the communities: Communities have to be thoroughly understood before taking up any activity The nature of the community can be understood by collecting basic information and statistics. This will give us necessary information to decide if Nirmaan should take up developmental activities, if so which activities. But this information is useful in understanding the community from outsiders’ perspective. True understanding cannot be done as foreigner to the community but as someone who is well acquainted to the people of the community. For this, there should be a good relation between the volunteers and also the community member which can be attained only through regular interactions. Second phase talks about exactly about this.

Phase II -Connecting to the communities: Good relationship can be formed with the community through regular interactions, participating in their fests etc, helping them out with as many problems that can be solved easily as possible, observing village life. But there can be a problem with the continuity of these interactions as the volunteers keep changing. So, whole team should get well acquainted. Also care should be taken to see that the continuity of relation is maintained even if there is change in the team. Developing good relations with the village heads and pnchayat members will help in smooth implementation of any activities. Making them aware of various government schemes, activities, helps in building their trust on us, while making sure that the resources are well utilized by the village heads. Also the village heads can also be regularly updated with the government schemes that they may not be aware of.

Phase III -Active Involvement of communities: This phase is where community involvement comes into picture. Team culture has to be imbibed into the community by forming groups and involving them in welfare activities. Also, we can conduct some events, programs where in there scope of the villagers taking part actively. This can health awareness campaigns by the local youth. Women health awareness and health check up organized by the women of the community with the help of us. A variety of such activities based on the demography of the community can be organized. Collaborating with the village heads and panchayats to solve any collective problem faced by the community will help in uplifting the society.

Phase IV -Local leadership development to sustain activities: This phase is where the community starts reducing its dependency on Nirmaan in carrying out developmental activities be it Nirmaan projects and some activities that are taken up regularly as part of community development. A calendar of events can be made which take place regularly by the community members regularly with the supervision/help of Nirmaan members. Nirmaan Yuva Sanghatana plays a crucial role here, which by itself being very motivated, motivates everyone in village to take part in the activities. So a good and dynamic Nirmaan Yuva Sanghatana should be formed. This will lead to complete ownership of the projects in the long run.

Theory of Change

What part of the problem are we solving? What is the impact we want to make? (Theory of Change)
We are bridging gaps, be it cultural, language and building their trust and faith o by this initiative, while alleviating the community. Any community will not accept anything done by an outsider due to lack of trust. That trust is built by acquainting well with them, volunteering to solve their problems to actually solve their problems. Also by involving the community in developmental activities, the acceptance and ownership towards the projects increases.
